What is StandBy?

StandBy provides free and confidential telephone, text, and/or face-to-face support for anyone in Australia bereaved or impacted by suicide.

This includes:

  • Individuals, family members, and friends
  • Schools, communities, and workplaces
  • Witnesses and first responders
  • Service providers.

StandBy’s services are informed by those with lived experience of bereavement and tailored to each individual’s or group’s needs. They can be accessed at any point in your journey, regardless of when the loss or experience occurred.

How does StandBy work?

By acting as a central point of coordination, StandBy helps ensure that all Australians have equal access to evidence-based, well-coordinated, and timely post-suicide support for up to two years.

When you contact StandBy, a coordinator can:

  • Speak with you over the phone
  • Help you decide what sort of help would best meet you or your organisation’s needs
  • Assist you with accessing local and national support services
  • Offer in-person support at your home, school, or workplace
  • Provide tips and resources for supporting yourself and others who’ve been impacted by suicide.

A recent independent evaluation of StandBy’s Support After Suicide service helps to significantly lower the risk of suicidality, mental health conditions, and social isolation following the loss of a loved one to suicide.

If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts or would like to speak with someone, remember that Lifeline is always here. If life is in danger, dial 000.

How to contact StandBy
